This year marks the twentieth anniversary of NetSuite. Cloud-based from its inception, when NetSuite was just a wee baby, it already dreamed of freedom from onsite servers and repetitive disparate software.
Now, past the teenage years, those dreams have come true. As NetSuite looks to the next 20 years, we offer some predictions about the future of cloud computing.Young people can probably hardly imagine it, but as little as 20 years ago you had to know people’s phone number, you owned your music (on a cd or a device), and you had to buy actual DVDs, or rent them, because you certainly couldn’t just sit on your couch and stream from some remote imaginary land.
Practically no one had heard of the cloud.
Yet, a technological shift was already underway.
Music got downloaded from the internet. Recording devices kept you from missing your favorite shows (and let you skip commercials!). And NetSuite was born.
In the future, we can expect a continued shift:
Just as your cell phone no longer has to store your entire music collection and photos, and your email has nothing to do with the storage capacity of your computer, cloud computing will continue to separate the hardware at hand from the software and data of business.
Websites with suddenly too much traffic, mad shopping days which cause backorders and other problems with supply and demand will soon go the way of the dodo.
When it comes to cloud computing, the future will be made up of serverless architecture. Businesses of any size will have just the infrastructure needed, platforms will dynamically allocate provisions automatically, likely even across server locations (modular computing).
Working in a serverless architecture, software development will accelerate, further enhancing such newer technologies as AI, machine learning and blockchain (as well as technologies we haven’t yet heard of).
In the world of software development, changes are rapidly occurring. Machine learning and open source code have already reshaped and dramatically improved the speed at which software goes from conception to implementation.
The software development life cycle (or SDLC as it is known) will continue to accelerate.
NetSuite has been open source since its inception, encouraging further development on its dynamic platform.
Soon, all companies may follow suit--prioritizing innovation over proprietorship.
Cybersecurity is a growing issue, as the Internet of Things (or IoT, so-called smart devices) expands new concerns have arisen.
Cloud computing offers enhanced data security. Physical onsite security at data storage facilities is already bank-level, but newer biometric scanning technologies go far beyond the keycard access of most office buildings.
Secure digital access technologies of cloud computing also go far beyond the days of a simple firewall. With VPN (virtual private networks) and other secure features, cloud-based data storage is already more secure than all but the government-grade servers.
Yet as technology improves, so do the efforts of those who would access personal or private information.
We expect that the cloud will continue to race ahead of the pack, setting the bar for data security.
